Hotshots / Conestoga
The Conestoga and the Tautliner are the two types of curtainside trailers. Both trailers are flatbed models and have a tarp system or drape covering them that can be rapidly lifted out of the way to provide easy access to the trailer for loading freight.
Using a sliding tarp system, Conestoga curtainside trailers are constructed. This system functions very similarly to an accordion in theory. The tarp reveals the flatbed as it is dragged forward, providing access for side, rear, and above loading.
The Conestoga curtainside trailer has one major disadvantage over a Tautliner curtainside trailer: the curtain structure makes the trailer up to 107 inches wide on the outside while only allowing a maximum of 102 inches of clearance for the trailer’s cargo. The 102′′ limit of the Conestoga curtainside trailer’s freight must be strictly adhered to.
